Adios, iWeb.
I finally got sick of iWeb. Considering that I started writing this blog using iWeb only 2 months ago, that is pretty sad. I just didn’t like how bloated it made the site, how everything slowed down all the time, and how much I had to go through to get things done the way I wanted. If I am going to work that hard at something, I want to be rewarded for my efforts.
So I am kicking iWeb to the curb. At least until they update that thing enough to be helpful for me. I don’t need drag-and-drop modification ability if the results are not truly WSIWYG. (And, let me tell you folks, with iWeb, the results aren’t.) In short, the little logo I placed on the old homepage was true on any number of levels. I literally had to trick iWeb into doing most of the stuff that I wanted it to do. Luckily, I think those days may be over. I may still be in the honeymoon phase of my new installation of WordPress, but I have done soooooo much in the last few hours, and so far (knock on wood) hasn’t fallen apart or caved in on me.
At last, I have the ability to host my own FLV files and play them via progressive streaming using an SWF wrapper! (For those of you who just cocked your head to the side, raised one eyebrow, and made a little “huh?” noise, it means that I figured out how to put controls on my flash videos and keep them all where I want them.) I am still working out the whole one image per post and then tiny images for text wrapping, but that is a common feature that I know other people use all the time. I just need to read up on it and then appropriately reconfigure stuff. I love that. I don’t have to trick it. I just have to configure it properly. Sweet. I don’t even miss the little drop shadows that iWeb added to everything automatically. Probably the only thing I miss is having a graphics-based links page…but gimme some free time and I might be able to score one of those as well.
I am sorry for those of you who only recently figured out how to keep up with my blog. I went and changed it again. I can’t help it. I’m like that. Forgive me. This page shouldn’t be any harder to figure out. Anyway, I hope you like the new layout. There will likely be hiccups (hiccoughs, for those spelling freaks out there) in the system for the next month or two while I tinker with adding components and removing stuff I don’t want, but it’s already a less bumpy ride than iWeb. Plus, now I can update my blog from any computer. Not just my iMac at home. Yay!
