Taiyaki

According to the Japanese version of the Voting Channel on Wii Connect 24: 69.9% who answered eat taiyaki headfirst. 30.1% eat taiyaki tail-first.

Apparently, this says something about your personality in the same vein as your blood type or your birth sign. Riiiiight. Interesting though. For those who don’t know, taiyaki is the wonderful dessert / junk food item that I refer to as “Waffle Fish” (click through the photos if you like). I used to post about them in my study abroad journal.

One thing that surprised me, also from the results of a Wii survey:
54.7% prefer strong tastes. 45.3% prefer light tastes. Say whaaaat? This is Japan…land of the delicate palate…

Or maybe... I mean that you like to be the center of attention. Don't worry about it! I don't mind at all. :-P
  • How sweet of you to say so, Deas! That must be helpful. Thank you soooo much!

Thanks a lot for your kind words, TofuUnion.
    Oh, you are Japanese?
Unfortunately I rarely have opportunities to meet native English speakers. Movies are often too difficult for me but I have been studying through “Before Sunrise”(a film in 1991) on my blog since this January. I feel that I am especially weak in reading. Yup. Long way to go. Thank you for your advice.(^o^)/
    Ma Yumiでした。haha (sounds French???)

  • TofuUnion
Ask your Japanese teacher or I could explain in details If you would. It's about GA and WA. You would better say 関西弁分からへん or 関西弁は分からへん

Ma Yumi, I am quite impressed with your courage and effort on your website. I guess why you are a bit down with the motivation. Way to myself, I think my English is among the best of all the Japanese colleagues in my work place(scientific one). I read English almost everyday, even so it should be a long way to go regarding speaking and writing. Do you meet English natives or watch (Hollywood) movies in English ? I am sure it helps you.
  • :-) モチベーションが足りなかったら、貸してあげましょう!(Um...I tried to say: If your motivation isn't enough, then I'll lend you some!)

  • I always tell people 関西弁が分からへん。 It's definitely a dumb joke. But it makes my students laugh a lot. (Some of them come from Hiroshima.) I really like Mayumi's site because she includes Osaka-ben AND standard Japanese. That way, I don't get too lost. :-) I am going to try out that site you mentioned, too. Sounds cool.
  • TofuUnion
Thanks for info about Podcast, Ma Yumi(in French ?) Isn't Osaka-ben a bit disturbing for you, Deas ? For me, might be possible.

By the way, do you guys know GYAO ? It's a kind of PC TV. http://www.gyao.jp/ You can enjoy Movies, Dramas or Music Videos, etc. which are completely free of charge. This site is run by firms' advertisements. I think it's good for learning the language, too. You can make your User ID 登録 by your mail account.
  • Ok...things that should never mix: pineapples and taiyaki. Pretty sure that's just below shrimp and milkshakes on the list. Gross.
  • Kathy
I don't remember what my favorite filling is.....I only tried a few....they were all good. I'd probably go with adzuki bean since it seems to just go with that sort of food. ^_^;; I do like pineapples though. YUM! I'd try pineapple flavored filling in my taiyaki anytime.

I also like Osaka-ben...may be when school is over I'll actually have time to listen to the podcast - sounds fun! 2 more weeks til it's over! and about 3 til graduation! Oh my!
  • Note to self...Kathy likes to eat pointy things first...so...Kathy, do you like pineapples? Ha ha. Dumb joke. For me, I think I choose whichever part of the fish looks overcooked. You know? If it's beyond "fluffy" and venturing into the "burnt" or approaching the "charcoal" level, then I eat that first. Why? I save the best for last. Obviously. :-)

TofuUnion, I think I'm the same as Mayumi - I'm more of a podcast listener. (Speaking of which - check out Mayumi's podcast if you're interested in learning Osaka-ben.) ;-)

By the way guys, what is your favorite flavor of taiyaki filling? Mine is probably the sakura flavor that they have around hanami season.
  • Kathy
I don't have a particular preference for how I eat taiyuki...I believe that when I've eeaten it it's been kind of random what I chose but I think I may have a preference for the tail first....more pointy edges that I'd wanna get rid of. But then I could see myself not wanting the fish to stare at me....but in general it's just food and it goes to the same place so I don't care. But I'm not Japanese. =P
  • Oops! I think I made a mistake, I think. hahaha I think I am a Japanese.
    Thank you so much, Deas.

    Hi TofuUnion-san,
I don’t visit Japundit website but I listen to the podcast almost every week.
  • TofuUnion
    Correction: plate (not plat):

You guys, do you visit Japundit ?
  • TofuUnion
ha ha ha. It's funny with Taiyaki. Yes, it may have some kind of personality meaning. The thing is you eat your favorite on the plat at first or towards end. But what if you eat head and tail together at first or towards end ? I suppose this is my way.

Mayumi-san, I understand your point. It's quite natural that elders are more health conscious and older they become, the weaker tastes they like.
  • Hi Mayumi! I used to eat taiyaki tail-first, but when my host family saw me they told me that it had some kind of personality meaning. Since I didn't understand what it meant, I just switched to eating headfirst like everyone else did. I dunno my blood type, but I'm a Scorpio. Ha ha ha. I'm silly. I should start a new trend and eat them bottom to top. That'd be fun.

Also - your last sentence requires only one "I think." You have one at the beginning and one at the end. ;-)
  • I eat taiyaki tail-first. I am blood type AB and a Taurus.

I feel the tastes of food seem getting stronger in Japan. I think the younger they are, the stronger tastes they like, I think.
