Mayday, S.O.S.

June 22nd, 2007

RED ALERT. My iMac won’t boot, thanks to the 10.4.10 update to Mac OS X. I’m frantically trying to solve the problem by mimicking people who successfully finagled their way out of the same issue during the 10.4.9 update. The most helpful things I’ve found are Igor Minar’s posts and this article from Unsanity. All I have to say on the subject is that updating my Windows machines never killed them. Generally speaking that happened before I updated them or after, but not as a direct result of the update. Darn you, Apple. Darn you to heck. :-(

For those of you wondering – yes, I am a bit too calm about this. Probably because I realize that 3 years worth of my life is stored in digital form on this computer. Photos, projects, papers, music, programs, everything. I don’t want to erase myself and start over, which is the conventional wisdom (or at least the conventional tech support wisdom) for these situations. I want to save my own butt. And to do that, I gotta be calm. Pray for me. I just might lose it if things go south. But I’ll lose it calmly. Ha ha.

Sad News from Home

June 21st, 2007

Just found out that a pretty bad fire happened in my hometown, claiming the lives of some firefighters. I’ve been int he Sofa Super Store before, and can easily see how that thing could pull a Vesuvius on us. After all, loads of upholstered furniture…close together…and lots of open air / lack of compartmentalization… Made for a bad incident. My heart goes out to those who were effected. I learned a lot about fires after my brother was the victim of an arsonist last summer. It’s pretty horrible stuff.

In other sad, but not heavy, news – where have all the comments gone on my blog?? I am starting to wonder if a spam filter is killing EVERYTHING, or if people have just completely lost interest in me…hey, it was bound to happen…NOT. Ha ha ha. If you read this, would you mind attempting to comment, and if your comment doesn’t show up, shooting me a quick email? I am not sure if I need to tinker with something – hadn’t changed anything, but you never know. :-( I miss the conversations…

My Fair Lady

June 19th, 2007

I love musicals. Can’t help it. Stumbled across the famous 1964 Warner Brothers Production of My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in the DVD section of Aeon in Niihama during the last weekend. (日本語のウィキペディア記事) I’m strongly considering using it in class – or at least in a club. Click for a video clip and translation comparison. Read more…

Pirate Museum

June 18th, 2007

Here are some photos from my school trip to the Murakami Pirate Museum. It was pretty cool. 14 miles by bicycle. Gotta love it. I put some commentary in the captions. Remember, you can hit “X” to close, “N” for next, and “P” for previous at any point when viewing pictures through that lightbox script. Hope you enjoy it. I’ll get some video up when I can. Till then, enjoy my trip to the museum and the boat trip through the old pirate stomping grounds.

Yay for leaks! Thanks to whoever posted this. For the fellow nerds you need no explanation to understand the awesomeness. For those who are confused…please see this site and my earlier post about questions that came up when I saw the Starcraft II footage released in Seoul, South Korea at the World Wide Invitational. Yahoo!!! :-D
