Alex - good point. Filial piety? Old hat. Governmental support? New sexy. Why? My guess would probably revolve around the post-bubble conspicuous consumer culture, the aging population of Japan (and consequential boom in the senior citizen services industry), and the role changes that individuals in a nuclear family are undergoing. But I wouldn't honestly know what I'm talking about.

Ken Y-N - You're quite welcome for the links. I sure hope that those 85% keep their heads on straight. This is not to say that there are no violations of human rights going on in Japan, nor is it to condone those problems that do exist here. I just want people to remember that society is what needs to adjust - not the law books, unless there are specifically messed up laws. (I'd know nothing about that, again.) As for rights being like butter, I'd agree with it in this aspect: if you dump a whole lot on top of someone, they become much more slippery. Though I doubt it will make my popcorn taste any better.

Thanks for the linkage, Deas!

Q4 indicates that 85% of people tend not to agree with human rights whingers, which hopefully means that we won't see the situation in many parts of the world where you dare not say too many negative things about a person in case you get accused of being racist/sexist/fattist/whateverist.

Of course, I'm sure someone will take Q4 and twist it to mean agreeing with Aso's statement a couple of months ago about rights being like butter.

Wait a second. Stop the presses.

The way that I'm reading into this is that some people believe that, "Financial Independence is a human right that should be government supported." Doesn't "government support" imply the exact opposite of "independence"? "Support". "Independence". "Supported". "Independent". Which one is it?

As far as I know, Japan is a culture where the children are supposed to support their parents in their old age. How is that a human rights issue? It seems a lot more domestic to me. It belongs in the "Family Ties Survey".
