Heavenly Kotatsu

September 3rd, 2007

I loved this clip from the drama Nodame Cantabile, which Jon suggested in his post about an interesting exercise routine… Fall is coming soon, though it’s taking its sweet time. It got me thinking about the cooler temperatures, and then this clip fell into my lap. It’s exactly how I feel about the kotatsu…a bit of furniture that I’ve decided I won’t live without from here on out. I’ll import one if I’ve got to. But they’re heavenly…even if they screw you over by ruining your schedule by increasing your preexisting narcoleptic tendencies… Anyway, here’s what the voice in the clip says. (At least what I think it says. Not sure on the 売る part of the sentence. Goes by too fast for my ears. Any corrections are welcome! Thanks, Mayumi!)

火燵:室町時代に登場し、現代に至まで、日本人に愛され続けている冬の暖房機。しかし、こんなに暢気で攻撃性のない平和の象徴のような物体が、この後、俺を苦しめる事になる。

Kotatsu: the winter table / heating unit introduced in the Muromachi Period and continually loved by Japanese people up to modern times. However, this object which symbolizes a carefree peace, void of aggression, will soon become a thing which tortures me.

Ha ha ha. Fun stuff. I like this drama more than I thought I would. Thanks for the recommendation Jon! (And Nicole, I’m working on 結婚できない男, so don’t worry. It’s next on the list.)

  • Wait...who was counterpart to whom?
  • I thought she was the counterpart to wassisname
  • Nodame is the name of the main female character. Her name is Noda Megumi (野田恵), played by Ueno Juri (上野樹里). Smash her names together and drop the "gumi" and you get her nickname, Nodame. Cantabile is actually an Italian term related to cantando, both which mean "songlike" or "singable," but it should be noted that in piano pieces, it implies that one part should be given emphasis against the accompaniment - like counterpoint or a descant. Since Nodame's main instrument is the piano...and knowing her character is off her rocker...I'm inclined to think that's where the title leads. I quite like it - rolls off your tongue. :-)
  • Nodame Cantabile. Sounds French. I'll have to watch the clip once I get home

Hiroshi Abe can do no wrong. When my mom asked her video guy if he had that series, he was like, "eh? your DAUGHTER likes HB? Strange...." I hope I haven't talked it up too much. The women can be a little obnoxious, but it's entertaining.
  • Thanks! Edited. :-) I look forward to seeing Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. I hear it's pretty good.
  • I think 「室町時代に登場し、現代に至るまで、・・・」
I didn't watch Nodame Cantabile but I like 結婚できない男.
