Scott, don't get me wrong - I quite like Mac products. I'm just not thrilled with a computer that repeatedly breaks (sometimes due to Apple automatic upgrades, sometimes due to hardware failure, sometimes because it's a full moon on a Tuesday after 3 in the morning and the tidal gravity is just right). When you pay top dollar for a top of the line computer, like I did, you expect to be able to use it to its full capacity. I don't like the feeling of having to ease my computer into things. It should be a workhorse, not a pretty desk ornament. Though, it does fulfill that function whether or not it works. Ugh.

You know, I had lunch with Emily on Tuesday and we were *just* talking about the fact you had just gotten your computer back and about the fact I really want to get a Mac. But hmmmmm.

Apple's stuff is really coming off as shoddy, man. Shoddy.

I'm unfortunately not brave enough to do things which could damage the computer. (I'm perfectly comfortable working with computers. Do it frequently.) I lack the proper tools to open the casing, and I'm not sure if it does void the warranty or not. Therefore, in the interest of being the best customer possible should the words "replacement unit" come into play soon....I'm going to let Apple be the only ones to touch the inside of the unit and therefore be the only responsible party. :-( Stupid stupid computer problems. I tell you what, I really sing Apple's praises when things are in good working condition, but I hate them with a fiery passion for how lousy the service is when things go awry.

That sucks. Good luck with repairs. When my macbook went down for the count, I sent it in TWICE to Apple. Good thing I used to live in a big city in Japan where an Apple Store was conveniently located but 30 minutes from my house. If they replaced your HDD, and you're still getting the same problems, then it could be something else. I've worked on those generation of iMacs before. Opening up the back doesn't void that warranty, I believe. See if you can reseat the connectors to the HDD. Also reseat the memory though i doubt this is the cause of your problems. If it's not the HDD then it's probably the controller on the motherboard, which means they'd have to order an entirely new mobo with processor and all attached - a long wait. I hope that you can get things fixed soon!
