Since Last Time

September 26th, 2007

Wow. It’s only been 4 days since my last post and lots has changed. Let’s do a brief recap.

The temperature has dropped about 10 degrees in the mornings and evenings. Afternoon remains blazingly hot. Mother Nature is confused. Fashion is not. (I saw scarves as early as August. The Japanese want their weather to be punctual.)
I’ve been to Osaka and Kyoto again (3rd or 4th time). Lovely as ever. Highlights included experiencing the cool Nightingale Floors at Nijo-jo (official 二条城 site; English pamphlet PDF) and eating a cheeseburger with grilled onions. Mmm.
The second season of Heroes premiered in the U.S.A. My post about Japanese language in the show didn’t make it on time. Hope it’s still slightly interesting / relevant by the time it goes up.
Apple sent my computer back. HA. Wishful thinking. That hasn’t changed.
I have finished 28% of 正しい漢字かきとりくん, which I had been neglecting for around 2 and a half months. I’m officially a 3rd grader. Rock on. Just got another 766 to go till I’m almost half-way literate! (Why does that not sound as optimistic as it actually is?)

Ok, now we’re all caught up. And now it’s time for class. Gotta run. Check in tomorrow for a small announcement, too. TTFN, ta ta for now.

  • Well, if I ever get my computer back I'll happily reedit and upload the video. And once I can, I'll be watching the new season with the next video in mind. Blllaaaaah.
  • you will find the gaijin speaking Japanese very interesting in season 2. Download/watch it here http://www.tv-links.co.uk/list...
  • That's cool! If you zoom in all the way on the map and then click the East arrow once, you can see my island too. I'm darn close. (And the population of my island is close to 8,000.) If I'm ever over in Hiroshima (excluding the JLPT this December), I'll try to check it out. And in the meantime - Hokkaido rules, dude. I highly recommend making the round trip. (Here's my entry on my trip. Forgive my ignorance and youth at the time. 3 years does a world of good.)
  • I'm not big on the tourist destinations, but if you like to do the temple tours and what not then Kyoto is a much better place to go. I like the atmosphere of Osaka, and I'm not the kind of person who typically enjoys big cities. For example, living in Tokyo for a year was a great experience that I wouldn't change if I could, but I couldn't see myself settling down there. Osaka, though - I'd consider living there a possibility.

My wife, on the other hand, loved Kyoto. She says it's her favorite place in Japan. Outside of Fukushima and Tokyo, though, it's the only place she's been to in Japan. She's obsessed with Hokkaido, though. She can't get enough videos and information on it. So, I have a feeling that her ranking of Kyoto as best-place-in-Japan will change the more she travels around the country.

My favorite place in Japan is this really small island off of Kure in Hiroshima called Kurahashi-jima, population 7,200.
  • Hey Alex -
I also hope Fukuda can do what those before him haven't done so well. I'm more inclined to think that he'll be more helpful with Japan and North Korea's volatile relationship though. Either way, here's hoping. (Slightly related - did you see this?)

Is it bad that I choose roads based on where the smell of autumn fires will be? Ha ha.

I like Kyoto WAY more than Osaka. As a place to visit, that is. Never lived in the Kansai region, though. No idea what that might be like. Why do you prefer Osaka? Nostalgia?

Wish I had a computer. Dagnabbit.

Dunno if it's global, but DS software seems to be non-regional. You can play western games in Japanese DS units, and vice versa. In other words, you shouold theoretically be able to play kanji games and whatnot on a Korean DS... BUY ONE! They're cheap! (And a kanji game is coming out for the Wii soon.)
  • I hope Fukuda can bring some stable relations between China and South Korea soon. And maybe persuade North Korea to be slightly less hateful towards Japan.

It's definitely Autumn here, and we just had our Harvest Moon Festival yesterday. (Chuseok, in Korean)

I've been to Osaka and Kyoto about that many times, too, but I much prefer the former, although the latter has its charms.

I'm currently downloading the first episode of season 2 of Heroes, and I've already got the Korean subtitle files for it so my wife can watch, too!

    I want a Nintendo DS.
