Disenchanted

October 18th, 2007

I’m not a particularly huge fan of Japanese pop music, but some of the artists appeal to me for whatever reason. I can’t help but think that artists like Otsuka Ai (大塚愛) or Ueto Aya (上戸彩) are cute and peppy – which I concede, increases my opinion of their music, even when it’s lacking… Ha ha. That’s natural. (Heck…some people even like Arashi (嵐)…for some reason…similar situation, I bet…) Well, one of the artists I liked – without any good reason – was Sawajiri Erika (沢尻エリカ). I’ve never seen her acting, though she has been in a few dramas and films recently. I actually came to like her by osmosis. For a long time, every day I went to buy lunch at the grocery store, her song was playing over the hi-fi. I learned it by accident, and found that I could sing it at karaoke without too much trouble. Therefore, I thought I liked her. Keep reading for my reasoning. Here’s the old image of her (as the character Kaoru Amane who “wrote” this song in a drama).

I was wrong. During the spells where I’ve not had a computer recently, I have watched more Japanese TV than I usually do. Panel shows are pretty common, and special guests are actually run-of-the-mill guests. Having seen Sawajiri Erika on these shows…I find myself quite disenchanted. She’s not much good at small talk in my opinion – often lobbing terse replies to well-meaning questions. She also answers in ways that tend to emphasize her luxurious life style, in comparison with the viewer or the interviewer. (Once asked if she liked going to the beach, she replied “I love Cyprus.” Right. Thanks for that.) All in all, I dislike her new look, conversations, personality, speech, and insane make-up. (She was asked to leave the set of SMAP’s Bistro because her makeup had gotten in her eye and she appeared to be crying. That’s where you draw the line with gaudy makeup. Then again, she’s in loads of makeup commercials, so maybe it’s part of the endorsement deal for Maquillage or one of the other companies?) I guess this is just the way of the world with female pop star celebrities of a certain kind in this day and age, huh? Britney Spears in the states couldn’t be more of a laughing stock if she tried. Paris Hilton (if we’re using “pop stars” in the most broad sense possible) and Lindsey Lohan have also become famous for their less-than-attractive falls from grace. Maybe it’s a similar thing? I dunno. I’m talking more about the trashy image here, than drug and alcohol use or whatnot. Just to be clear. Seems all the more harsh in Japan, where cute is considered necessary for popularity to some degree. Here’s the more recent version of the image.

I actually find myself in agreement with the YouTube people here about the PV for FREE – the director took the champagne innuendo too far. To the point where giggling and / or outright disgust take hold. Sorry if that offends anyone. Just pointing it out. By the way, since the firewalls at school block YouTube, I cannot be sure if these videos are working properly. This is an experiment – is it possible to post blind and have the rest of earth still see my content? (I hate using YouTube…this is one issue, the other is that stuff gets pulled down all the time and your links go dead…especially with the new copyright protection roll-out they’re introducing.) Anyway – lemme know if there are any viewing problems. And if you agree or disagree.

Ok, fair enough. I kinda agree with you there anyway. Dunno why I listed Blunt. :P But my point remains unchanged - there's some good stuff coming out. Haha.
  • Ah ha ha ha ha!
  • "There's been some good stuff coming out of the UK recently, like James... Blunt."

Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear me, NO. There IS good stuff coming out of the UK, but Mr. Blunt is definitively NOT on that list. But (as a kindness to my ears,) I haven't heard the new album, so perhaps I'm not being fair.
  • I have friends who are big fans of the current UK crop of artists. Can't say I'm one of them, though. Just another flavor of lame, to me. Anyhoo - end of hijack!

Meh, I don't go a bundle on modern music, J-pop or not. 90% of it, in my most humble opinion, lacks any sort of depth or rhythm or even beat to get into. And don't even get me started on gangsta rap "music" (I use that term in the loosest possible sense).

    *Rant over*

Having said that, I think the music scene is slowly getting better, according to my tastes anyway. There's been some good stuff coming out the UK recently, like James Morrison or Blunt.

Just my two cents anyway. Sorry to hijack the thread. :P
  • Thanks for the correction. Noted and changed. Ha ha. It's rare. Enjoy it. :-P

But you do agree that you like them as characters (as opposed to singers) and that influences your opinion of their music, right? By the way, I think the all-in-one media star thing needs to stop. Crossover careers are one thing, but sheesh, being marketed that way from the start is a bit much if you ask me. Ha ha ha.

I know that Arashi comment is pointed at me. Hmph. But I don't necessarily like them for being "cute" and "peppy". Honestly, they just kinda grew on me thanks to a) certain members I like being in dramas I really liked and b) singing the theme songs of dramas I have watched. Their songs are catchy as drama openers and once you hear them so many times you just learn to like those songs haha. Give me a break! =P

Btw, I think you meant to use "threw" instead of "through" in the above comment. ;-)
  • Ha ha ha - Carlie, thanks for the comment. I actually through threw [Edit: I'm an idiot] that Arashi comment out there fishing for a female response... ;-) I actually like Otsuka Ai to some degree...though her music is incredibly repetitive and juvenile. I mean, I'd choose it over other stuff. For annoying voices, though, and I know this is probably heresy to J-Pop fans - I really dislike Ayumi Hamasaki. She's so nasal it hurts. Anyway, yeah - the Sawajiri Erika thing is basically what brought about my entry. Didn't even know her that well, but I'm quite put off by what I've learned. Anyhoo - I'm rambling. Thanks for the comment. :-)
  • I can't help but feel I fall into the 嵐 bandwagon, and I see exactly what you are saying here but it sort of applies to me in the opposite of what you are saying about Erika - I mean, I don't really "like" arashi's music - however I do listen to it. What I do like about Arashi is their variety shows. Seeing their personalities, somewhat, does make their music more attractive. But I don't think I could listen to it if it was in English, the only reason I do listen to them is I can't really seem to find any Japanese music I actually do like, and knowing the words from seeing them at the start of tv dramas makes them somehow more tolerable.

Otsuka Ai - she is sooooo bad. Her voice is really irritating.

As for Sawajiri Erika, I confess I've never seen her in anything or listened to her. I hear, however, that she is a dreadful person and now a specific tv station is refusing to work with her or something? Lots of people tell me to watch 1 litre of tears, but well, somehow I've been turned off with all this bad talk about Erika...

I confess I am not very much of an expert on Japanese music at all.
  • Ha ha - dunce cap duly accepted. But note that I said CUTE and PEPPY. Neither of these mean "talented." So...that's basically all I have to offer in my defense. I think that Japanese Pop music is about a cult of personality. Rather, it cultivates stars as characters - much as one would choose their favorite on a TV show or a sports team, the reasons for liking them can sometimes be completely unrelated to their profession. (I did an anthropological short essay on Tsunku and the Hello! Project management. It's wacky, man.)

I couldn't agree more about Angela Aki. She's great. Heard she's performing in Matsuyama soon. If I wasn't absurdly busy, I'd go. But I am. Alas.
  • >I can’t help but think that artists like Otsuka Ai (大塚愛) or Ueto Aya (上戸彩) are cute and peppy - which I concede, increases my opinion of their music, even when it’s lacking… Ha ha.

Deas, Deas. You leave me no choice but to give you the -1 all attributes dunce cap for that statement. I mean. Aya Ueto?! She's a horrible singer. And I can't stand Otsuka Ai.

I actually did see that episode of SMAPxSMAP with Sawajiri Erika. My opinion of her went from decent actress/singer to stupid gyaru girl. I mean, seriously, was there anything going on up there during the interview? She was the worst SMAP guest I've seen in a long time.

YUI is a stark contrast to the glamour and glitz of Japanese stardom. She's very humble, softspoken, and she even writes all of her music. Angela Aki is another non-conformist star. I love most of her songs because she, unlike the other aforementioned artists, is actually musically talented rahter than being a product created for consumption.

If you ask me, 90% or more of popular music in Japan (things you see in the chart) is crap. But the same could be said of American pop music. I try to keep up with the Oricon top 30 every week. Of those 30, usually only one or two songs make it to my playlist.
