Novel Progress

November 8th, 2007

Well, surprisingly, I’m still writing a novel this month with the NaNoWriMo crowd. Ha ha. You can check up on my progress here if you like, or just wait for some update asides. I’ve heard that other people in the Japan pool had extensively planned out their novel – going to the extent of drawing maps of their fantasy worlds and whatnot. While I admire this, when I said I was getting my thoughts together, I meant thoughts like “space was colonized by humans.” Yes, I actually pulled that from my notes. That’s my “planning,” you see. The result, of course, is that these folks who have spent loads of time planning and really letting their ideas percolate are waaaay ahead of the curve, writing wise. Some are nearing the halfway point already. And my guess is that their narratives are going to be fantastically ripe with detail and generally lovely reads.

My novel, on the other hand, hasn’t settled into a single genre yet. It has 3 rather flat characters – 4 or 5 by the end of today, I hope. What is does have, and have in spades, is exposition. Oh, the expository greatness of my novel. Ha ha. I’m deciding where to go each day when I sit down to write. It’s pretty ridiculous, actually. The story has evolved into its current 11900 word form based on very small decisions that were made almost arbitrarily. It really reminds me of my days doing improvisational comedy with the Charleston County School of the Arts troupe, the Fighting Gnomes. It all just happens. It’s almost like I’m not even driving. I love it. Ha ha. So…will it be a murder mystery? Will it be an exploration story? Will it be a morality tale? I have no idea! And I think I kind of like it…

  • Hey Mahud - welcome to the site. :-)

I'm glad to know that other people have also jumped in, feet-first, for the crazy ride that this is turning out to be. I wish you the best of luck in finishing your novel. Keep updating us!
  • I discovered NaNoWriMo the day it started, and didn't have time to plan anything. I had no intention of writing anything fictional, although I have had many ideas, but never anything driving me to actually write anything.

So, I'm basically making up the plot as I go along, and so far it's turning out better than I could of expected. I've come up with 9 characters that I love, and the ideas keep on coming. I'm not sure where they are coming from though. It's like the story is writing itself.

Best of luck with your novel :)
  • Thomas and Carlie - thanks for the encouragement. :-) If I successfully make it through this year, there's a good chance of me doing it again. I look forward to writing at the same time as you two next year!
  • You're going good - you're up to how far I got the first year I tried it. Anyway, randomly ridiculously boring stories are best for Nano, I thinks. I'm sort of sad I'm not doing it this year. Anyway, I added you as a buddy on the site, so I can challenge you next year.

I thought I would participate this year, but I haven't started yet, so I guess I'm not. I find out about nanowrimo on November 1st, signed up and then got busy with something else. Maybe next year. :)

It's cool to see that you've already written so much. You are 1/5 of the way through. I hope you'll reach the goal!
