電波 means reception (as in cell phones), and if you say 「電波が一本ある」it means "I've got one bar of reception" (you know, the little display of bars on the top of the screen).

Alex - Doesn't the word 電波 mean "reception," or literally something like electromagnetic waves? I thought I learned that from your blog. Do you know the word for antenna? That might work better...but I like where you're going with it. (And 待った is more natural, too.)

Ah, that would be the secret of my LOL-fu. But I'll just give it to you, cause I'm cool. I find the pictures that have credits and links, follow them, and get the clean copies. But I always leave links back to the original photos. So, yeah. The vast majority are not credited. Kind of limits my choices. But you can go hunting for your own too, I suppose. Haven't done that yet.

I went to download a LOLcat pic today, but have no idea where you have been finding the captionless originals!

Clay - you mentioned switching to でちゅ and ちゃま style cartoon hamster-esque childlike Japanese...not ギャル語. And I only ever teach high school! My kids may speak wacked out rural Japanese slang, but none speak like lolcats! You gotta teach me, or I'm in the dark. In the meantime, link me to some resources! Ha ha.

Gerard - you're right. My Japanese isn't up to par on ギャル語, which is as near a proxy of the lolspeak "English" that is used in these things as you'll find, I think. I only ever studied 標準語, so I'm kinda out of luck. If you've got any ideas for how to better approximate the goofball speech patterns, be my guest! But some would say that the English ones aren't particularly funny in the first place...hahaha.

By the way - the 2 movie themed ones are basically direct copies of the subtitles. The subtitles aren't particularly accurate. For instance, the 2001 subtitle is much better translated (in my opinion) as 「なんということだ！ 星に満ち溢れている 」, which I found - along with an insightful explanation of the utterance, here.
