Michikajima

Watch it in full 640 x 480 resolution! (Overlay Pop-up)

I took a spin around the tiny accessible islet called Michikajima (which means “Island Near the Road”) recently. Partially, this was to test out my ability to shoot video from my scooter again using a travel pack’s cross-strap as a mounting point of sorts. Partially, it is because it looks really weird right now. It is uninhabited, but has a camp ground that is supposedly free for use provided you sign up….somewhere. It’s weird. Anyway, here are some off-season pictures of it, and a video too.

Note – I am currently testing Shadowbox JS as a Lightbox 2 replacement. (Shane recently asked how I make stuff pop up and show in one go, and I started looking up newer scripts out of curiosity.) Let me know what you think. I’ve discovered that while I can embed overlay-type pop-up versions of larger resolution flash videos (see the update I made yesterday to my Sumo Vids post), it really cuts down on the caption flexibility. I have been known, on occasion, to write a really long caption… They apparently aren’t always readable – depending on your screen resolution, etc. Also, I’ve been told that it’s uncool that you must now click the “Previous” and “Next” buttons instead of on the right or left side of the picture being shown. I’m used to it already…ha ha. Also, I have noticed that depending on your browser, you may have a funny partial invisibility of FLV players on the page once you’ve opened a pop-up once. Again, I’m kind of ok with it. Let me know about any other issues and what you think, ok? (I just discovered that it resizes photos to fit on your screen, too…which is cool and all…except that it downsizes them for me…which makes them uglified. Grrr. Oh well. Maybe I can manually set the sizing? Testing continues.)

  • Mom - Awww. Thanks, Mom. I don't mind. Sheesh.

Nick - Of course I was wearing a helmet! It's against the law not to! I don't want any trouble - and I certainly don't have a death wish. Ha ha. So far as the question goes: ShadowBox handles Lightbox tags, too. So SB works quite well as a drop-in LB replacement, but not the other way around. I imagine that switching to new scripts would just involve changing the tag to point to the new script, right? I don't really have any experience in that area...but you make me curious. I was thinking of switching domain names this year, which would require a massive reworking of every image, link, video, etc. on my blog to point to the new domain name after I move the whole blog over. Scares me a bit. Ha ha. But yeah, maybe that answers your question a bit? (Worst case scenario, you could try a search-and-replace type function, right?) :-)
  • That's a unique way of showing us the island! I hope you were wearing a helmet! ;)

Question: If you use Lightbox or ShadowBox on your blog now, is it still possible to update/change them to newer scripts in the future, or would you have to change every blog post you made using them?

Wow- In that whole time, you only passed one other moving vehicle, one parked bicycle, and no other people. Yet it looks like money has been spent to make the place nice for people. Even the brickwork patterns...so where are all the people??? The music and the photography made me think of your dad, and of how like him you are- He would have loved what you are doing, and he would have loved going on little jaunts like that with you. He would be so proud of you, as I am ! Sorry to get so nostalgic. Hope it doesn't bother you.
