Holy crap, we DO say it!?

Man, I remember arguing about whether or not people say this without tacking a “later” or “tomorrow” or some other word on the end. It struck me as so unnatural when my kids said it to me after class. So, one of two things is going on here. We either say it, or we are teaching Japanese kids to speak like aliens in American cartoons. Hmm.

    Nicole - it appears that the Technorati widget has gone berserk... I'm looking into it now. I revamped the Google Shares widget while I was at it, but I'm not sure I like it yet...hmmm... :-(

    in any case - i have never, in my life said "see you." I always tack on another word. I have, however, in the last year and a half fell into the pit hole and started speaking like an alien in an american cartoon.

  • Yup, I have always said it, but it can't be stretched out very well when said. See youuuu. Maybe that's what bugged youuuu.

  • Alex - Yeah, you're right. We do say "see ya." But I never say "you." Especially not "you" pronounced ユー. It's just weird! I know we say it. I knew we said it back when this conversation first reached my ears two years ago. We just say it...better? Ha ha ha. I do think we're teaching wacky English sometimes (convoluted rather than conversational), but not alien English. And besides - English is English is English. I frequently hear tales from folks from all over who are asked to speak with a more American accent in class. That makes me sad, as though their English isn't just as valid or something. And I love most of their accents to boot. Ha ha. Sigh. Sorry about that, fellow English speakers.

    All I'm saying is that it sounds weird when my kids say it, but natural when a native speaker does. Or when Zim does, despite his waaay over the top delivery. Weird to me. Not wrong. ;-)

    Also...I just wanted an excuse to put a clip of Invader Zim up... Maybe I should translate and subtitle an episode... Hmmm... That might be mighty tricky.
  • Wait, I say "See you" all the time. Actually sounds more like "see ya", though. Regional variation of language use?

    A: "I'm gonna head out. Talk to ya later."
    B: "All right. See ya."
