Sex Sells

Ha ha ha – I’ve been meaning to post this for…2 years. It’s the sake vending machine at the ferry port on my island. Nude chicks selling alcohol. What’s not family friendly about that? (Actually, I guess she’s wearing a hat, if that counts as clothing.) Sure, she has nostrils on her upper lip like a duck of some kind, but I guess that’s why she’s in her line of work. She’s got a face for radio. But the old fishermen who buy booze from her aren’t too bothered by it. Her milkshake bring all the boys to the yard. Ha ha.

UPDATE: That’s no GIRL it’s a KAPPA!!!! (Everyone scream.) Thanks to James for pointing that out with the first comment.

  • Julian - thanks for the clip, but it's darn similar to the one that James posted for me. Still, I appreciate the comment!

Bingo Bango Boy - those are some great links, too. Ha ha. The cute thing I mentioned already - citing the animated film 河童のクゥと夏休み. But those sushi mascots are pretty classic.

Kappa used to be creepy goblin-like things; now they're usually cute little guys.

Looks like an "old school" vending machine.

  • Nope. Kappa the creature = 河童 (river + child). Kappa the raincoat = 合羽 (match / meet / join + feathers). Different kanji. They're homophones. ;-) I believe that 合羽 is 当て字 (phonetic character matches) for capa, the Portuguese word.

hmmmm... i still don't find that kappa very cute.

is the reason they call the rain slickers here kappa because it makes you look like a kappa as well?

  • Chuck - I hope the sushi preference is all that you share with their kind. Then again, they're not ALL evil, disgusting, nudist alcoholic, liver-stealing, violent creepy monsters. Some of them are not only considered cute, but wind up in movies for children as the lovable companion. Witness 河童のクゥと夏休み. ;-)

THAT's what a kappa looks like? I was just reading about them the other day... and how they apparently like to steal peoples' livers... by pulling them out of certain orifices. no kidding. these creatures mean business. I almost dropped the book I was reading because it phrased it in a rather horrific manner.

AND did you know that kappamaki is named after them because it is apparently their favorite? . . .it's my favorite too :/

  • Alex - yes, indeed. And neither of those are particularly attractive. Actually, that goes for the kappa lady too.
  • She'll eat your soul, just like 酒! I see the parallel.

  • James - eeeeeeew. That explains the nose and the "hat." Ha ha ha ha ha. Well, her species is beside the point to the elderly oglers awaiting their boats. :-| Great catch. Thanks.

That's no naked chick- it's a naked kappa!
