IMAX in Japan?

Short one today. Obviously, from this week’s Batman post, I’m hoping to catch The Dark Knight here in Japan. But what would really rule is if I could find an IMAX theater somewhere. I did some poking around online and I came up with….squat. I found some site that claimed that X percentage of the digital projectors leased to theaters were in Japan, another one that looked like it was built by me 13 years ago in Microsoft Frontpage and basically had the word Osaka in red and then a bunch of images that don’t load (though it lacked background music), and I even struck out on the official IMAX site. It lists no theaters in Japan. What gives? Is there not an IMAX anywhere in this country? I mean, sure, I’ll settle for a smaller screen, but I’d love to see films that were meant for the big big screen on the BIG BIG screen. Know what I mean?

  • I was googling IMAX in Japan and stumbled upon you as well. There are several IMAX theaters here but have not been able to find a listing of DK playing in any of them. Please let me know if you manage to see it on the BIG BIG screen. I already saw it on the small screen and enjoyed it so much I want to see it again... even bigger.

  • Looks like Imax is FINALLY coming to Japan this June in Kawasaki, Saitama, & Osaka (no doubt, where land is easier to get)
    read it here:

    theater list here:

the first movies in kawasaki will be TRANSFORMERS (normal imax) and HARRY POTTER 5 (IMAX 3D)

Looks like 109 is coming through for us. FTW.
  • Yaaaaaaaaaay!
  • Hi Deas. :) Sorry, I made a mistake, that should have been Harry Potter 6, not 5. I posted a link to your blogpost on my blog too and posted the dates for transformers and Harry Potter.

Also, it seems like there really was an IMAX in Tokyo, in Shinagawa no less (I had heard rumors of like an urban legend for years) for TWO years while I'd lived here, and I never knew!

But it closed in 2007, just before the big 3D boom. Too bad...

But I think they may have only shown aquarium-related stuff like sea turtles swimming in the ocean...fun, huh?
  • Tom - if we find one, we should go together! Ha ha.

Hey, let me know if you do come across a decently over-sized screen around these parts Deas. I too am uber excited about the caped crusader's latest crusade and feel it just be blown up to ungodly proportions.

  • Itiro - thanks for the comment, and welcome to the blog! I totally agree that the Dark Knight deserves a big screen. Hope I get to see it at an actual IMAX theatre. Also - your blog looks really cool. I just wish I could read Portuguese! Ha ha.
  • Thanks for this post, Deas.
I'm a brazilian and was googling for IMAX in Japan.
The Dark Knight is coming, and it deserves an IMAX screen.
    Thanks!

  • Alex - did your page have background music? Animated GIFs? ASCII art? Hmmmm?

Tom - thank you! I don't know how, but I was getting totally different results on an "international" listing site from IMAX. But I followed your directions, and sure enough - the list was populated with hits. Thanks!

Clay - that's a cool site too. I guess I should have looked for jumbo screens in Japanese. That would have made sense. I had a bad "looking stuff up properly" day. You know how that goes. Well, if you've ever had one, that is.

BillyWest - ha ha - even having lived in Tokyo for 10 months, Kabuki-cho still gives me the creeps. Ha ha ha. Besides, the other screens might be closer. Thanks for the tip, though.
  • I'm pretty sure there's an IMAX in Kabuki-cho here in Tokyo.

Far be it for me to quibble, but the IMAX website does seem to list some cinemas in Japan. There are 9 listed in the pull down menu for Japan on this site:

    http://www.imax.com/ImaxWeb/welcome.do?param_ac...

None are particularly close though. There's a few on Kyushu and one in Osaka.

Of course, I could very well be overlooking something completely obvious which renders everything I've just said untrue. More than likely.

  • I made my first web page about 13 years ago, too, but I did it in notepad, and the website was for a project that my chemistry teacher requested of me to document all of our chemistry expirements in class. The background tiled-wallpaper image that I made was gaudy, and I used frames. The links were default-blue, which clashed with everything else, and I had a few scrolling marquees for good measure. Man, was I proud of that web page.

I'm not sure about IMAX in Japan. I just wanted to reminisce.
