Deas in Action

(Bigger version!)

Here’s a news segment about Matsuyama Chuo High School’s wonderful “English Day” event. For some reason, my physics class seems to have jumped into the spotlight for this clip. For those of you back home who wonder what kind of job I do…this is more or less what I do.

Hey kiddo. You look great. I can’t believe seeing you teaching school. I feel so old! Miss you. Love, Aunt Cathy

I didn’t see you throw chalk at any foreheads, or pull any ears. And where is your paddle? How can you teach without a good bum swatter?

wow! Those students’ English is sooo good. But maybe I just have low expectations since I teach Middle School haha.

Aunt Cathy - thanks for the comment! Ha ha. I feel old myself, now that I’m teaching school… Miss you too.

Clay - see, I decided to avoid my harsh freakout punishment type activities while the TV crew was present. ;-) (And actually…I don’t do that…the worst I did was shoot every student with the air gun, to their great amusement.)

Kathy - they are a talented bunch of students, alright. But it’s a super English high school, with special funding for some activities. It’s not your average classroom - hence the news coverage.

Deas! That’s amazing to watch … You look like one of the teachers I would’ve paid attention to in school. I hope you’re doing well! (It certainly looks like it!)

Chuck - it’s too bad you weren’t there! You’d have had a blast. And I guess I’m glad I look like a real teacher there. It means my disguise is working nicely… Mwa ha ha ha.

Chris - hey! Thanks so much for the compliment. I’m doing quite well. How are you doing? It’s been a long while!

That’s a clip to treasure and show your grandkids! Must have been nice teaching something other than English, if only for a day.

wow. you’re like a real live grown up with a real live job. That’s so cool. ;o) Someday, I’ll grow up too.

Nick - thanks to the wonder of the internet, keeping it for posterity should be a snap! (Or a file download.) I just have to make sure I keep a copy in a dominant format.

Jordan - thanks for the kind words! Feel free to join my class. Or do what I do in my spare time and watch Professor Walter Lewin’s physics courses from MIT’s open courseware program. (No…really.) They’re available on iTunes. ;-)

Emily - “real live jobs” and being a “real live grown-up” are soooo overrated. I vote we catch lizards, drink honeysuckle tea, ride the fig tree / imaginary dinosaurs, get Kevin Costner action figures stuck on the roof when his plastic bag parachute works too well, etc. in perpetuity. :-D

Nice work Deas. You do seem like a proper teacher there. But I also agree that the real world and real jobs are entirely overrated. Here’s a quote from a novel I came across recently that I’ve been bandying about to justify my total lack of a career plan:

“I know I ought to be getting money out of people, or devoting myself to things I don’t care a straw about, but somehow I’ve not been able to begin.”

Ah yes, I’ve dabbled a bit in the open courseware program myself! You are not alone. Very nice indeed.
