Site Changes

February 22nd, 2009

I’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.7.1 after lots of fighting with my installation. I discovered a caveat with my host on the compatibility pages. 1&1 hosted sites need to drop a tweak into their .htaccess files. (And mine seems to need refreshing after every stupid plugin activation!) But hey – it works after a little manual maintenance. So that’s good.

I’ve also changed the theme. I hope it’s attractive to you. I hope to get a premium theme and deck it out in the future, but for now, I am quite satisfied with this freebie (I even left the footer links intact). Please give me feedback on the site if you’ve got any. This post is also testing to see if my feed is still linked properly, if Twitter Tools integration is still functioning properly, etc.

I may have to swap databases out so that I can use mySQL 5, as I’ve got a sneaky suspicion it’s part of the whole internal error 500 chain that happens when the above mentioned .htaccess file problem rears its ugly head. In the meantime, you may notice a few more tweaks as I get this site feeling a little more “homey.” Just lemme know if you see anything broken. I’ll jump on it. Thanks. ;-)

I like the new layout! V. Nice!
  • Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I still think I can improve it a bit. Gotta figure out what to do about that header image. Hmmm.
  • @Deas
I'm still not seeing much that suggests Japan around here (make a banner!), but the green made us brothers. Blog brothers.

  • Kirk - it's just around the corner...less than 10 hours from now it'll go live... ;-)
  • looking good so far, looking forward to your matsuri post

  • Carlie - ooouch. It was bad. Ha ha.

Reesan - thanks! I sort of feel the same way about the width. :-) The last blog post is courtesy of a plugin called commentluv. I'm tempted to switch over to Disqus for comments, but I don't want to lose the commentluv functionality...hmmm...
  • Looking good Mr Hakata! It feels a little loosened up now. A better use of screen real estate. The old theme was too narrow, if I may say. :-)

I also like the 'last blog post' in the comment! Is that a widget or did it come bundled with the theme?

  • I guess, in Clay's case, the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Haha, ok, yes, that was bad.

  • It's not easy being green, or so they say, but I miss the old colors...

  • Clay - weren't you the one that asked me where the Japan in the theme was before? Ha ha. But now you miss the green? Well, like I said, I hope to make the site a little more homey over time. Too slick right now. Ha ha.
  • @Goddess Carlie
I really like this reply feature. Ha ha. Thanks for the feedback on the theme, Carlie! Ha ha. The only thing I've got left is to give my blogroll an overhaul. I already deleted the non-Japan half and my schools. Trying to trim the fat, you know? I'll be adding your site and a handful of others that should have been on there ages ago. ;-)
  • I'm loving the theme. I can't really think of any helpful advice to make it better, I think it is pretty good :)

Wow, the theme looks great! I just think the top header font is looking a bit too "serious" for this kind of blog. Even though, I'm not recommending Comic Sans either, haha :P, so I think it's great.
  • Steven - thanks for the comment, and for the honest appraisal. I actually agree with you - I've been looking for ways to "de-business-ify" it. Ha ha. I have to better learn how the theme is pieced together first and then I can play with the header image a bit. Good point, though.
