Smart.fm Died

Awww, man! I knew something was bad when I was getting server errors this morning. Then I saw the banner message at the top of the site for a little bit. Should have seen it coming. Chris over at Nihongo Notes posted earlier about the super-shaky transition that the folks over at Cerego seem to have stumbled into. The site formerly known as iKnow.co.jp is now called Smart.fm, and the main spaced learning application’s name is iKnow. Other than the name change and UI overhaul, which doesn’t seem to cause warm fuzzies too much, the only other detectable difference is that the site is totally unstable now. Real bummer for all the fans out here. We love the iKnow application and want to jump back on it as soon as possible! Here’s hoping Cerego figures it out. We’re rooting for them. In the meantime, you can follow their Twitter updates to find out more, as the screenshot above suggests. Sigh. I’ll be doing some analog pen and paper studying until they are back up.

  • Natto is awesome.
  • Natto is STINKY in my book. But hey、 if stinky is awesome to you...
Haha. Wrote this from my mobile on the way to KIX. Taiwan、 here I come
    - from stinky natto to stinky tofu.

  • I think they have fixed most of the problems now :D
  • Sure seems like it! I'm happy again. Ha ha. (I am such an addict.)
  • Ugh, I haven't been back to iKnow in a few weeks, then I come back to find out the name was changed to Smart.fm. I really need to brush up on my Hira/Kata and a few Hangul lists. :( Well, I hope things will be straighten out soon--or they should just change it back to iKnow to make the site work again. :D
  • Ha ha - Sanjo, you know you can just say "kana" to mean both Hira(gana) and
Kata(kana), right? I thought it was humorous, 'cause if you chop off the
first half of each word, the abbreviation is correct, but if you chop off
the end, it's uncommon (and longer!). かなのべんきょうがんばってね。
  • I hope they can bring this site up soon, although I have a feeling it will take some time. I really enjoyed using this to brush up on my Japanese and learn now vocabulary! I had my old Japanese teacher using iknow as additional work for students at my college. She was asking me about the name change and such but I didn't know to much about it but this explains all the problems.
  • Yeah, it's a sad state of affairs at the moment. I almost recommended it to
my college professors, too! (Now I'm glad I held off for a bit. Ha ha.)
Here's hoping it's up again soon. The splash page has changed, btw.
Actually, all I'm getting at present is a 503 server error. Sigh.

Oh well, the iKnow app wouldn't let me learn any more Katakana until this Friday, and I was worried I was going to lose the Natto Challenge to Jamaipanese. No complaints here lol ^^

In all seriousness I think they should have taken the site down for a few days and done testing before going live, but this is good news for everyone. Hopefully they can solve the issues and bring back the iKnow we love.
  • I think the loser should have to eat sugar natou (see my youtubes)

Well, the widget on my blog is back, which means iKnow is back. I refuse to use the new name.

    EDIT: No more link love?

If I lose maybe I should add sugar if it makes it taste a little better. Well, either way I want to try Natto at some point.

I still call it iKnow too. I still get mixed up with Last.fm and Smart.fm....
  • Clay, that sugar 納豆 looked way messed up. Like hippo snot or something. Ugh.
Kudos to you for broadening your culinary horizons, though. Yikes. Ha ha.

And I think I'll continue to refer to it as iKnow, too. I don't think I dig
the Smart.fm name. At least not yet. Maybe it'll grow on me, though. Hmmm.
  • I totally agree about both wishing they'd taken the site offline for a few
days, and about hoping they get it back up and running smoothly soon. Till
then, I guess it's nice to be forced back to book studying for a bit. The
change might help fuel me for a bit. (Or get me way excited to going back to
    the iKnow app!)
