Horse Meat

Uh-oh, here comes trouble. Some people flipped out when I ate whale meat, and now I’m eating horse. If you’re against it, that’s cool - but please don’t yell at me for it! :-) I get that it freaks some people out. But to me, it’s a culinary adventure. One that’s not possible in North America. Ha ha. Just FYI - I’m slammed this week, so posting may be slight. Apologies in advance! Ok, if you want your say, have it in the comments! Just keep it friendly, folks. ;-)

  • om nom nom.
  • My sentiments exactly. :-)
  • I saw recently that something like 80% of the Kyushu horse meat is imported live from Canada then fattened up here, 17% is from Kyushu (or Canada-born horses that spend more than half their lives there), and just 3% is the real deal Kumamoto basashi.

Note that there's a lot of fake labelling as well...
  • Canada can still butcher horses? Wow. That's something Americans outlawed
before the Canucks! The US used to sell butchered horse meat to the Asian
markets too, but it was made illegal a few years back, if I recall
correctly. It's still horse meat though, right? (And Canada isn't sending
over any gyoza or bamboo shoots...so it won't make the TV news...ha ha.)

Yes I have also experienced that back in Japan, my friends made me eat a raw meat. After I have eaten it, they were all laughing out loud. Later that I have learned it was from a horse. :P The taste was ok, and yes the horse meat is very soft.
  • pretty entertaining until you downed the rest of the package there at the end...NOM!!!
  • Whaddaya mean "until" I downed the package at the end? Ha ha. Some people
would argue that that's when it got interesting!
  • medoki
Looks like very little fat on the meat. Actually, I didn't see any fat... very lean looking. Yum?
  • that meat sorta looks like chinese bbq pork. O:

    「馬がうまっ!」ということだろう?
  • 寒っ!親父ギャグかよ!?(爆笑)やっぱり、ユーチューブでも誰かが同じコメントを投稿した。

Your Japanese TV impersonation was right on the money! EVERYTHING is おいしい〜! but no-so flavoursome roast beef? doesn't sound that appealing, even with a beer.
  • Yeah, that's pretty accurate. I won't be having it again (with or without
beer). Ha ha. But I had to try it. It was in the flippin' convenience store,
for crying out loud! How could I not try it? Ha ha.
  • This this butchery take place after our podcast session went down the pan? Looks tasty! I liked horse meat when I was in Japan ^^;
  • Indeed, sir. This and about 99 other things of higher importance. Lots of
actually job-related stuff. Ha ha. I was simultaneously worried that you
stayed up way too late for your school considerations and jealous that you
were chatting with who you were chatting with. Ha ha. Looking forward to our
next attempt - here's hoping that Yahoo! BB improves. (It's a little better
today, actually. Things might be looking up.)

I had a similar experience to yours where your friends gave you horse meat, but I was fed 蛇. It isn't particularly bad, but not great. Much like tough and stringy beef.
  • Andrew
Looks interesting. I will look for it at Lawsons next time I go.
Actually I am kind of am kind of intrigued by the things I have eaten and enjoyed while I have been living here in Japan.
While I haven't had whale (to the best of my knowledge) I have enjoyed Fugu.
  • Japan has worked wonders for my culinary horizons as well. I used to be
crazy picky. Now I just about anything, provided it's not slathered in
mayonnaise. (And hey, Japan is nuts for mayo, so sometimes I could still be
considered picky.) (爆笑) Fugu is good, I agree. Though it's not as "exotic"
tasting as I imagined. Ha ha. I prefer it in sashimi form, how about you?
  • Andrew
I have only had fugu in Sashimi form, and liked it very much as well.

I grew up in San Diego, so my tastes have always been diverse (mexican food is quite popular) though I am not quite as adventurous as I once was in trying new things.

My aunt is from Philly, so even had a real cheese steak.

    have fun
    Andrew

Ha ha I love it. Thanks for sharing this. Keep up the good work. :)
  • Thanks for your comment, and especially for the kind words!
  • In England, and therefore most of the English-speaking world by extension, horse meat has traditionally been considered undesirable. British sailors, for example, when they were fed on long sea voyages (which had to be preserved with salt for the journey, possibly pickled as well, and stored in barrels in the ship's hold, so it wasn't what you would exactly call the best of the best) used to joke that it was "horse meat", even though in fact it usually wasn't.

The whole "horse meat is nasty" meme may owe something to the fact that in centuries past horses were generally useful animals to have around (remember, the automobile only became common less than a century ago), so they weren't usually slaughtered for meat until they were decrepit.

But hey, if the horses were raised for meat after the same manner as cows... I'd try it once, given the opportunity. Probably wouldn't be a real exciting culinary experience, but might be interesting anyway.
  • YAY! More videos watching Deas chew from afar!

My favorite parts were the : "tiny TINY STEAK!" and "うまい!!” bits.

I'm actually a fan of horse meat. NOM NOM NOM.
  • 馬刺 is my favorite food of all time. I applaud your horse eating efforts!
  • Mistytheblu
lol~ luvd this! "look! it's like a little tiny tiny steak" ROFL
  • I had horse meat last year and thought it was terrific! We went to a place that specialized in it and provided a "horse course" ... of course :) I recommend trying something like that the next time but I will say that the horse meat tasted so much like beef I half-wondered if they were pulling something over on us. And I wasn't prepared for my North American friends to be so horrified when I told them about it. They reacted as if I'd eaten my own live young.

I'll eat any animal, provided it's not endangered - but even then, I'd be curious. I was really disappointed I didn't get a chance to eat cobra when I was in Vietnam. I might have a had time eating cat but other than that ... game on. (get it?)
  • Ah! And I just read your comment about being willing to eat anything as long as it isn't slathered in mayonnaise. I feel you 100% - I absolutely despise the stuff. Pass the chicken hearts; hold the mayo.
  • Great video. Haven't sold it on me as something to seek out, but soft, flavorless beef jerky seems like it would have its place with beer.

So true about Japanese TV, though you need to space out the eating, the eye-bugging, and the "oishii" a little more :) There's always that 2-second gap between phases, no?
  • YOU-YA
Hi, Deas! I have not seen you for a long time!
I have never eaten the horse meat... And I could not see the meat in Hakata... Are there any rare meats at the convenience store??? It is unbelievable!!

I am in Hong Kong. It is convenient for me because the country can use English.(but my English skill is not so good... of course I cannot speak Cantonese.)
But there are some people who really cannot speak English...
When I ordered "CHICKEN" at a meat store, they served me "PORK"!!! I was really surprised when I went back to my home!!XDD
  • Haha!
    You're crazy! =)
I like how you make fun some parts of the video which would be boring otherwise (like the 'Huh' =p)
  • kevcham
Whales are endangered. You might as well be eating eagles or some other threatened species. This is not about culture - it's about responsible behavior as a human being. As for eating horse - that's not an ecological issue. Eating animals is a moral issue. Can it be justified? My own personal answer is no, it can't.
  • Whales are not endangered, kevcham. Whales are not a singular group, either.
Some kinds of whales are endangered, yes, but not the kind I ate. Your
personal answer to the question you posited is fair enough - but my personal
    answer is obviously "yes."
  • Melissa
I love watching you eat. You are so adorable! :)
