Hey everybody! The Japan Times published a little article I wrote for them yesterday. I was in transit at the time, so I couldn’t post about it at the time. If you’re curious about how you can abbreviate Japanese to sound more natural, give it a read! (It apparently caused quite a stir among the editors there. Especially “azzasu” and “~zzaimasu” – the legitimacy of which is…kind of the point of the article. Enjoy!)

Trip note: I’m currently writing this from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I’ll be here in Vietnam for a bit before making a sweep through Singapore (2nd time), Malaysia (2nd time), and Thailand. I’ll see everybody on the other side of the winter break. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

    So, I'm sure you already read my comments over at JapanSoc, but I just wanted to say that I enjoyed your article, being a fan of the 俗語 myself. My criticism still stands, however - There is no way to universally define "proper" language, so if I was the editor in charge of your article then I might have swapped the wording in your introduction.

    P.S. - I've sort of returned to the ブログ界 myself. See you around the nets, and perhaps in person if you ever find yourself in my neck of the East Asian woods.

    point, or if that was indeed the result of the editors trying to shrink my
    absurdly long writing into one single column-sized blurb. I agree with you

    idea people liked this site that much. Admittedly, I kinda fell stealth
    there for a bit. It's been a fast paced fall and winter so far, and I had

    Yeah, I went through your back-catalog of articles in the meantime. And your Youtube videos. I really like the reviews you did of the Heroes Japanese speaking people. Also the food reviews are always fun. I'm learning Japanese in college, and your language videos are awesome. I seriously started tearing up when I watched your English summer camp videos. I wish I could do something like that someday.

  • Excellent! I'm glad to see this sort of thing published. I made a huge effort during my year on exchange to Japan to learn as much such slang as I could. By the end of my stay, I was making a much better impression on people for having done so. One thing you neglected to mention, though, is how much fun it is to toss around slang in another language.
  • Thanks very much for the compliments! And let me assure you, were it not for
    the limitations on length, I'd have droned on for ages about how fun it is
    to use slang (properly) in another language. I'm too used to free-form, no
    restrictions writing. I'm sure I put the poor editors at the JT through
    their paces trying to hack it down and keep it intelligible. Anyhoo - glad
    you enjoyed it!
